This 1960s Span House on the Fieldend estate, Twickenham, Greater London is on the market. Renovated, but still looking the part.
It was back in 2012 when I last featured a house on this particular Span development/estate, so I’m well overdue a revisit.
You probably know all about Span and the work of Eric Lyons. Basically, this was affordable modernism with a focus on creating a community on each site. Hence the communal grounds and lack of garden walls and fences.
This particular Span Estate is located in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, dating back to 1960 and sat in five landscaped acres of grounds. That setting is described as both ‘leafy’ and ‘tranquil’, which is never a bad thing.
It was designed with young families in mind, especially when it comes to space for children playing. But if you have more serious things in mind, it is also said to have a good choice of local schools too. On top of that, Fieldend also has good access to public transport and a location which makes it easy to get into or away from London.
So that’s the site covered. As for the house, this is one of 51 terraced properties, with this one being an end terrace T8 picked up by the current owner on 2003 and updated since. The house is also in a prime spot overlooking the green and with some extra walled garden to the side.
I know that because the owner sent over details and some added background that isn’t available via the owner.
According to the owner, it needed rewiring, central heating and so on, as well as ‘some TLC’ when it was bought. It also has features perhaps not evident from the agent’s photography, such as the original 1960s staircase and balustrade, exposed brickwork and original beams. It also has a stairwell ‘flooded with light’ from a large skylight. Love the full-height windows on the ground floor too.
From the images, it looks like nothing really needs doing to it, with the possible exception of you putting your own stamp on it, whether that’s decor and furnishing or something more substantial like a new kitchen or lighting (not that there’s anything wrong with either as it stands).
You are looking at a Span house with updated fixtures and fittings, an original layout and the main period details still in place.
The accommodation is laid out with an internal porch, a large through reception room with views over the private rear garden, a fitted kitchen and study downstairs.
Heard upstairs and you will find two double bedrooms, a further single bedroom, a family bathroom and a separate w.c. That’s not quite all as you also get a secluded rear garden along with a separate single garage with power and light.
