It has been on the market before. If you missed out, this 1930s Oliver Hill art deco property in Frinton-On-Sea, Essex is now back up for sale.
Not that anything has changed substantially with it. Not even the price. A change of agent and a fresh set of photos, the latter probably its biggest selling point. Modern House always does a property justice on that front.
Of course, the name Oliver Hill is a big selling point here, as well as the architecture he created. Built around 1934-5, this is one of the 35 houses built for a development that hopes to showcase the best in British modern design.
Some of the country’s most innovative young architects, such as Wells Coates, Frederick Gibberd, and Connell, Ward & Lucas, as well as Oliver Hill, were invited in the project, with a number of those houses still in place in varying conditions.
You might be familiar with this one I featured last year, as well as Hill’s Round House, featured back in 2016. There was also a heavily-renovated Oliver Hill build up for sale back in 2013 too. But this one has gone under the radar a little.
It’s a lovely example too, although as I have said in the past, this is a house where the architecture is the selling point. The interior and some of the details are perhaps in need of a little bit of work to bring it back to its best and in keeping with its exterior.
You will find it on a private road and a short walk from the beach at Frinton-on-Sea. Quite a striking presence on that road too with its white rendered exterior and that lovely curved on the side, with a balcony just off it.
Enter via the front door into a hallway with WC, with a kitchen to one side with some original fittings and that large, bright living/dining room to the other. The dining area leads out through full-length doors to the garden.
From the kitchen, an original porthole door leads to a utility space with shower, storage and larder and there is direct access to an integrated garage with original sliding doors, although that is currently used as ‘studio space’ but could be returned to its original use according to the agent.
Upstairs you will find the first floor with three bedrooms, a family bathroom and separate WC. The master bedroom, which is currently used as a second reception room, is described as a light-filled space and offers ‘distant’ sea views and access to the balcony area.
At the front of the house, there is off street parking on a curved drive bordered by shrubs and a damson tree, as well as a separate double-length garage.
To the rear is a ‘mature private garden’ with lilac trees, a pond and a side section lined by a ‘well-established grapevine’ which apparently enjoyed a bumper crop last year. There’s a potential hobby for you.
A lovely house that perhaps needs a bit of work to bring it to the next level. If you are the person to take it on, the asking price remains unchanged at £465,000.
