I’m featuring this 1930s art deco property in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire because it’s a case of before and after.
The house was hugely popular when I featured it back in 2014. That was for two reasons. Firstly, the price of the house and secondly, the originality within.
It offered an opportunity for someone to create something rather wonderful with most of the period features intact. But it had its problems in terms of the original layout and when it went up for sale a second time, it came with planning permission for an extension. Someone has taken advantage of that and done a modernisation job on the place too.
The end result is certainly modern, although some of the period details have been preserved. But there is an overall contemporary feel to this one, perhaps because it has been extended as well as updated. Originally this was a house with just two bedrooms. Now it has four. Possibly five at a push.
As I said, some details have been preserved. The architecture itself looks fairly similar, even if it has upgraded windows. Inside, some original floors and fireplaces too. But an all-new extension at the rear, which adds 1,000 sq. ft/ of space, obviously contrasts that.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste and whether you like the idea of a modern interior mixing it with an art deco frontage.
The layout is now made up of an entrance hall, three reception rooms (one of which could be a ground floor bedroom five), a spacious rear extended open family living area with bespoke fitted kitchen and bi-folding patio doors, separate utility room and a downstairs shower room.
Head up to the first floor for the ‘feature’ landing with art deco glazing and doors leading to four bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom also has a dressing room and en-suite.
The outside area has been reworked too and now has a driveway with parking leading to a double garage and pedestrian steps lead up to the property.
To the rear is an ‘extensive’ patio area a ‘good size’ garden laid to lawn.
I get the idea that the renovation has just been completed or in the very recent past, as the seller points out that property will come with a full building control and professional consultants structural certificate for mortgage lenders.
The price, as you might have guessed, has jumped too. When I first spotted this one, it was up for sale for just £150,000. After the work, it is on the market for offers in the region of £599,950.
