Heavily updated, but that’s a positive when it comes to this 1930s art deco house in Whitley Bay, Tyneside.
I’m just basing that on similar houses to either side, neither of which have the presence of this 1937 build, which has undergone a substantial amount of work in the fairly recent past.
You will find it in a prime spot overlooking the seafront at Whitley Bay, with sea views to the front either from your window or if you want something more impressive, from the roof terrace above. Yes, there is a terrace, always a huge selling point.
The presence of this house is down to the original architecture, as well as the black and white contrast for the finish. The white is obviously the rendering (redone as recently as 2017), with the black courtesy of the aluminium double glazing, which was installed by The Heritage Window Company. So not Crittall windows, but not far off and a huge step up from the forgettable uPVC on the nearby properties.
Striking once you get inside too. Of course, a renovation here too, but the ‘drama’ of an art deco house is still here, as is the original parquet flooring. I like the darker walls in this place. It really makes a change from going for a completely white finish, which seems to be pretty standard these days. Art deco houses were never just white; they were about style and opulence, which is the direction taken by the owners here.
But it is a house where the ‘new’ outweighs the ‘old’. Yes, the flooring, the staircase, the window on that stairway and the architecture itself are representative of the 1930s. But the finishes are generally more contemporary.
That’s hardly surprising. As I said, a lot of work carried out, some of which might not be obvious from the photos. That includes a new heating system, a refitted kitchen, a radiated bathroom, re-wiring, bespoke stained glass windows and a refurbished roof terrace.
As for space, that is made up of a ground floor with porch, a large reception entrance hall with feature staircase, a living room with curved bay window and bi-folding doors to the rear garden the refitted kitchen with a utility room off it.
Head up that staircase and you will find three bedrooms and a refitted bathroom, with the second floor hosting the fourth bedroom and access to the roof terrace.
That’s not quite all the space though, with a garden room/office (depending on what you need) built this year. A garage with electric door finishes things off.
A garden, of course, specifically a landscaped rear garden a smaller garden and parking space at the front of the house.
