Modernism or brutalism, take your pick. But I’m going for the 1960s Lawrence Abbott brutalist property in Frimley, Surrey.
This is a development I have visited before on these pages, most recently back in September of last year. As you might recall, this is one of a number of (award winning) brutalist dwellings (32 in fact) that can be found around Apex drive, all dating back to the mid-1960s.
Challenging architecture then, just as it is now. This is the kind of thing that you either love or hate. I know, I haver said about a few places in the past, but it really does apply to these houses more than most.
If you love concrete, then it might be your dream dwelling. If your tastes are a little more traditional or you just hate the austere finish of this kind of building, it probably isn’t your next home.
The problem with these houses is often that people can’t really make them work internally. Few (if any) appear in their original state and when they do come to market, it’s often the case that many have been altered or reworked in a fairly clumsy manner. This one looks to have come through pretty unscathed.
Of course, it has been updated but the interior is fairly neutral colour-wise, with the decor and finish being a mix of modern and retro. Of course, the furnishings aren’t staying, but overall there’s nothing here that would make me run a mile. It’s pretty much a blank canvas once the removals firm has done its job, which is a big for me.
The house itself is classic as an end terrace, one with a decent amount of living space too. First up, an entrance hall and study, as well as a double aspect living room with views over the private rear garden a separate utility area with downstairs WC.
Head upstairs and you will find a galleried landing leasing to the open plan kitchen and dining area, the kitchen likely to have been a fairly recent upgrade. Talking of updates, the family bathroom is also on this floor and also recently modernised.
A second floor as well, one with three ‘excellent’ bedrooms some storage space. The master and second bedrooms are described as ‘generous doubles’.
That outside space is made up of a private garden/patio area, with more space accessible if you head to the ‘extensive private’ communal gardens. There is also a garage available to use too.
