Huge thanks to Sheila for letting us know about this 1970s Artist Constructor-designed modernist property in Flax Bourton, Somerset.
If you are not familiar with the house, this is one of a group of five houses in the village of Flax Bourton, just outside Bristol.
According to the , this was a speculative development by brothers Bob and Tim Organ (featured in the past on this site), presumably as a showcase for their talents and their aspirations as architects. That’s despite neither brother actually having any formal training as architects.
Each of the houses differs in look, but each one was constructed with meticulous planning, from the choice of plot (no house overlooks another) through to the layout and the interior design of the finished build.
Obviously time has changed each one, but the house here is still incredibly striking and at first glance, as contemporary as they come, despite dating back to 1972. Original features? Really hard to tell. Perhaps something to check out at a viewing. We suspect there are one or two, but don’t really want to commit without being sure.
As for the space, that was originally laid out in order to create distinct areas between communal and private living space, but today that space is described by the agent as ‘flexible’. Perhaps it always was to a degree.
Enter via the reception hall with slate tiled floor and access the kitchen / breakfast room, described as ‘the social hub of the home’ with dual aspect windows and doors from the breakfast room opening onto a terrace. A wood burning stove is also here, as is a utility beyond.
Beyond that is the sitting room with full length windows overlooking the gardens with further access back to the hall. A studio has full length windows and built in cupboards and a fifth bedroom on the ground floor comes with a terrace.
There are four bedrooms over the first and top floors. Three of the bedrooms access the family bathroom with a dedicated balcony for one of the rooms. The bedrooms also have built-in wardrobe space. Also up here is the dual-aspect drawing room with feature fireplace, while the top floor is dedicated to the master bedroom suite with a bathroom and dressing area.
‘Mature gardens’ are on two sides of the house, with fruits trees and lawns, as well as the terraces. To the front of the property there is a loose gravel drive with off street car parking and a garage. Oh yes, you also get access to a tennis court, which is shared by the owners of the houses on the mini development.
