An area we love and an architectural firm too. So obviously we are interested in this 1960s Austin Vernon & Partners-designed modernist townhouse on the Dulwich Estate, London SE26.
In some ways this is typical of the midcentury modernism that the area is known for. But at the same time, this is quiet a unique place. Confused? No need to be.
The difference here is that the townhouse here, part of a ‘secluded terrace’, has been ‘completely remodelled and extended’ by its architect owner.
Usually when such phrases are used we tend to worry. But not in this case. The resulting design has retained original detailing, with the wooden handrails and exposed brick finish in the living room flagged up by the agent.
However, the house has been reworked, with modern design integrated into the new scheme, which includes a bespoke kitchen by Rational and a combination of Dornbracht and Hansgrohe fittings in the limestone-tiled bathrooms. The layout itself had obviously changed too, with the idea of promoting both light and space throughout the property.
As for the house layout itself, the building is accessed via a pedestrianised walkway and a gated front courtyard. Head inside and you will find a largely open plan ground floor with hardwood floor, with the kitchen and a separate utility room in a front extension. A ‘panoramic’ window looks out across the courtyard to a verdant living wall.
The dining area and reception room are towards the rear and with floor-to-ceiling glazing to one end. Sliding doors open onto a landscaped garden that was designed by Catherine Heatherington.
On the first floor is a large master bedroom with walk-in dressing room, a second bedroom (currently used) as a study, and the main bathroom. The loft space is now the third bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
A very hip, very stylish living space, this is on the market for £899,000.
