This is such a stylish living space. An original 1960s Gordon Nettleton-designed midcentury modern property in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, which has been lovingly refurbished as well as extended by architect Ian David.
The house is actually an early 1960s build. Or at least some if it is. The refurbishment has added in that extension, as well as replacing the windows and upgrading the boiler and electrics and adding in some underfloor heating. Yet this house still has the look of the 1960s about it.
That’s down to an attention to detail. The the same Swiss roofing material as originally specified by Nettleton has been used for the extension for example, while the ‘original palette of materials ‘ was used to ensure everything is keeping with the original architect’s vision.
Love the exposed brick, the timber ceilings, that iroko wood staircase and the kitchen, which was reworked by David in collaboration with Tintab.
Yes, you can see the new, not least when you look at the outside shots. But inside, the marriage of the old and the new looks pretty seamless to us.
Of course, you can check it out for yourself with a viewing. And there is one of those this coming Saturday (28th May 2016).
You will find the house and its large garden on a ‘quiet cul-de-sac’. Once inside, you will notice that it isn’t just the garden that’s offering up space.
Head in via the hallway (complete with bespoke storage space) and past the utility and you will find the living room, kitchen / dining room and a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The latter is a new space with full height glazing. On the first floor you have three further bedrooms and a bathroom.
As we said, plenty of garden, which includes a lawned garden area as well as a short driveway for off-street parking. To the rear is a large, lawned garden that backs onto local woodland.
More details on the house at the agent’s site, as well as a shot of the pre-renovated property if you want to compare and contrast. If you like it enough to put in an offer, the asking price is £645,000.
