Not sure if it’s still the case, but these used to be so cheap to buy. If you missed out, you can always rent this apartment in the Le Corbusier Unite d’Habitation in Berlin, Germany via Airbnb.
The building is of course, a modernist icon and one of the great man’s cities in the sky, dating back to 1957 and just a short walk from the Olympic Stadium. That’s not far from the centre of Berlin via the U-Bahn (or S-Bahn) if I’m not mistaken (although it is some years since a trod that path).
It’s quite a building. You can probably see that just by looking at that bold modernist exterior. There are actually 530 living areas / apartments over its 10 floors, along with a shop and a post office on the ground floor and some nearby green space is the concrete gets a bit much.
I think there was some kind of renovation a few years back, but the apartments are obviously down to the owners. This one seems to have been taken on by a Le Corbusier obsessive.
Described as a ‘historically renovated’ apartment, it has two bedrooms with one single and one queen bed. There are also built-in closets, two ‘split level’ floors and a kitchen with all the original design elements by Perriand (the 1954 Marseille kitchen a modern stove, fridge and coffee machine.
There is also a living room with original furniture and built-ins by Corbusier, Perriand, Prouve and Wegner plenty of reading matter about Le Corbusier if you are feeling inspired. Finally. a bath with tub and shower (a 1929 shower as in Villa Savoie) and a small balcony area, which actually hosts a hammock for some reason.
Also here is Wi-fi, cable TV, wireless speakers and more for technology lovers and if you want some amazing views, you’ll be pleased to know that access to the entire building is allowed, so head up to the top floor for those. Don’t worry, there are lifts.
As we said, these were cheap to buy and it seems they are cheap to rent as well. According to the Airbnb site, you can rent this apartment in the Le Corbusier Unite d’Habitation in Berlin, Germany for just £9 per night. Yes, really.
